George Drouillard Visits McAndrew
..…4th graders learn about George Drouillard
February 26, 2008
Storyteller and actor, Darrel Draper, visited the 4th graders on Tuesday, February 19. Mr. Draper brought historical character, George Drouillard, to life through costume and monologue.
Who was George Drouillard? Mr. Drouillard (DREW-yer) was a hunter, interpreter, and Native American sign language talker for the Lewis and Clark expedition. He was known to travel alone through the wilderness for hundreds of miles, complete a task, and then find his way back to the Lewis and Clark expedition, which was constantly on the move.
George Drouillard also supplied the 400 pounds of game needed every day for the members of the expedition, communicated by sign language with the Native Americans, and protected the expedition from wild animals.
Mr. Draper was able to bring his performance to McAndrew Elementary thanks, in part, to the Brown County Arts Council.
