Basketball Team Ends Season in Subdistricts

ORD

This time of year, it’s either win or go home, and we hoped this would have the boys playing with a lot of fire.  We came out in the first quarter and looked as good as we have in a while.  Our press really hurt them, and their turnovers turned into points for us.  We put up 30 points in the opening quarter and held them to just 12.  We have to give Ord credit for hanging in there and making a run in the second quarter.  It looked like we would be heading into the locker with a comfortable 21-point lead at the half when Jesse went down with a sprained ankle with just 3 seconds left in the quarter.  To make matters worse we had a missed assignment on defense, and they hit an open three pointer at the buzzer to take the momentum into the lockers even though they trailed by 18.  Jesse was done for the night and the boys were determined to get the job done without him.

Ord made some runs, but whenever they would get the lead down to about 12, we would answer.  Bill Hunt hit some big shots down the stretch, and it was nice to see the boys pull together to seal the victory.  With O’Neill coming up next,  all thoughts were on Jesse Carr's ankle.

                                                      O’Neill

We knew going into tonight we were going to have to play a complete game to get a win.  Jesse wasn’t full strength but was able to play, which was a big relief to all of us.  O’Neill came out on fire and was knocking down almost everything they threw up.  Jesse was hobbled but hit several big shots to keep us in the game.  We found ourselves down by 12 early in the second quarter before we made a big run and stormed back to tie the game at 32-32.  We were down 41-37 at the half but felt like we had a good chance considering how good O’Neill shot the ball the first half.

In the 3rd quarter we missed several shots and they managed to make theirs, and once again we found ourselves down by double digits. We were never really able to mount a serious comeback once they started to hold the ball and we had to match up. O’Neill kept up their hot shooting while we continued to struggle.  O’Neill really stepped up, and that night,  they were the better team.  Anytime you get out rebounded 41-16 you can probably assume you lost the game.

It was a tough way to end the season, but the boys played hard all the way to the end and for that, we were very proud.  Some times you just go against a team that is on their game and that’s what happened.  Give O’Neill credit--they are a heck of a team.  Once again the support we had at sub-districts was unmatched.
