April 28, 2008
The Ainsworth Public Library will have a Book Discussion on May 13th with the title of THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeannette Walls at 2 p.m. This is a true story of the author’s life when she was growing up. The author’s father was an alcoholic who greatly preferred poker to gainful employment and wasn’t above stealing the family grocery money to purchase liquor. His wife could barely be bothered to raise her children. Walls and her siblings had to fend for themselves, providing their own food, shelter and clothing—even if it meant picking through dumpsters. Eventually the children found their way in New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. This title is remarkable for its lack of both sentimentality and anger and is a testament to the power of human determination.
The Library has multiple copies available for check out as well as a CD. Check out the book, read it, and come join in the discussion on this memoir of a child’s triumph over a dysfunctional family problems and poverty.
