Lunch Bunch for Middle School Students
by Gail Irwin
May 01, 2009
The Ainsworth Public Library will be holding registration for
the Middle School Lunch Bunch will be from May 18-23rd. This is for
students in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eight grades. Students
will receive the first title to read when signing up for the
program. They will have a month to read the title and then come to
the book discussion on June 24th from noon to 1 p.m. We will enjoy
a lunch together while visiting about the book. The next title will
be handed out at the 24th discussion time. Readers will then meet
again on July 22nd to discuss the second title.
The Lunch Bunch will feature two novels this year. The first title will be The Schwa Was Here by Neal Shusterman. When Anthony “Antsy” Bonano and his friends meet Calvin Schwa, they are impressed and puzzled by his ability to appear and disappear before their very eyes. Antsy concocts a moneymaking scheme based on the Schwa’s invisibility that seems promising until he and his friends overreach and are caught by the town’s legendary mean millionaire, Mr. Crawley. The second title will be Running Out Of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Jessie Keyser, 13, believes that the year is 1840. In truth, she and her family, along with a small group of others, live in a reconstructed village viewed by unseen modern tourists and used as an experimental site by unethical scientists. Jessie discovers that truth when her mother asks her to leave the village and seek medical help for the diphtheria epidemic that has struck the children of the community.
The Lunch Bunch Program is a perfect way to keep young adults
reading over the summer. Kids love to share their thoughts and this
gives them a chance to voice their opinion on what they have read.
It also shows them that reading can be fun. Lunch Bunch just makes
it so much more fun because they get to read the same book as their
friends. Please call or stop in at the Library if you have any
questions on this program.
