On Saturday, January 30th five students from Ainsworth Middle School competed in the 7th Annual Nebraska Middle School Science Bowl, held at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. The team included: Jose Garcia, Hallie Bower, Zayne Kinkade, Clay Chohon, and Hayley Murphy. The team earned third place out of ten in their division in the round robin competition. In their first round, they defeated the team from King Science and Technology Center by a score of 114 to 40. In their second round, they tied with a team from Bridgeport Public Schools with a score of 52. In their third round, they defeated a team from Nebraska City Middle School by a score of 84 to 48. By placing in the top four in their division, the Ainsworth team qualified for the championship double elimination competition that afternoon. The Ainsworth team was defeated in two rounds by a team from Elkhorn Ridge Middle School (Omaha), and then by a team from Brownell Talbot School (Omaha). Lux Middle School (Lincoln) won the competition and will represent Nebraska at the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC. Second place was taken by McMillan Magnet Center, Team A (Omaha). Third place was taken by Elkhorn Ridge Middle School, Team A (Omaha). Fourth place was taken by Brownell Talbot School, Team A (Omaha). The coach for the winning Lux Middle School team said he feels that at least five of the teams competing in the Nebraska Middle School Science Bowl would place within the top 15 teams at the National Middle School Science Bowl! Their sponsor, Mrs. Flynn, is very proud of how well the Ainsworth team competed, and would like to thank Mrs. Betty Bower for accompanying them last Saturday.
