Goodnight-Loving Trail

by Mrs. Davis

March 01, 2010

Tuesday, February 23, 2010, the 8th grade social studies classes were honored to have Glenna Abbott speak to them.  Glenna brought the bell that Old Blue, a longhorn lead steer, wore around his neck as he traveled on the Goodnight- Loving Trail.  Old Blue was owned by Charles Goodnight.  He traveled the trail from Texas north to the railway many times.  Glenna told about Old Blue, Charles Goodnight, Oliver Loving, and the bell.  Each student was allowed to touch a piece of history as the bell was passed from student to student. Mrs. Abbott allowed a student to shake the bell as we listened to the loud ring. Glenna plans to use the bell in educational discussions with students as long as she can, and then return it to Texas to hang in a museum beside the horns of Old Blue.  Mrs. Abbott also brought some Mexican spurs, belt buckles, and a small sample of her barbed wire collection to share with the students.  We all enjoyed this interesting and informative presentation and are grateful to Glenna Abbott for taking the time to share with us
