Fourth graders at McAndrew Elementary stepped into the Middle Ages today—costumes, pottage, and persuasive speeches included. They have been reading about daily medieval life. Students arrived as knights, ladies, monks, merchants, and more. They wrote and presented persuasive essays in character, presented for a video, created rose-windows “stained glass” art, and prepared and tasted pottage, a simple stew from the era.
“Our goal was to make history come alive,” said Mrs. Julie Micheel. “When students read, write, create, and taste the past, the learning sticks.”
“This experience lets students blend imagination with clear, evidence-based writing,” added Mrs. Alisha Strelow. “Watching them stand up, make a claim, and support it with reasons was one of the highlights of the day.”
