Measles in Nebraska 1-7-26

by Lori Clapper RN, School Nurse (Excerpts from NCDHD*)

With the recent cases of measles in Nebraska and throughout the US, we are reminded of the critical role that schools play in protecting the health of students, staff, and families. Immunization is key in preventing illness and illness spread. If staff or students are not immunized and there is a confirmed case at Ainsworth Community Schools, we will work with NCDHD* to provide communication and guidance. That guidance may include exclusion of unvaccinated staff or students for up to 21 days each time they are near someone who has a confirmed case of measles (classroom, etc.)

Symptoms to watch for:

-Fever > 101.0

-Cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Many viruses have these symptoms, so just be aware that these also occur with measles.

-Small white spots in the mouth that appear before the rash.

-After 3-5 days a red blotchy rash appears generally on the face first, then spreads

          downward.

If you suspect symptoms may be measles, put on a mask, isolate, and get a medical evaluation.

Vaccines can generally be obtained from your provider or NCDHD* in O’Neill or at a nearby satellite clinic (Ainsworth, Valentine). Schedules and appointments are available at 402-336-2406.
